The Cumberland Hotel has long upheld the elegant tradition of Afternoon Tea, a ritual that extends far beyond the history of our own establishment. The custom began in England in 1840, when Anna, Duchess of Bedford, found herself feeling peckish in the late afternoon. She requested a tray of tea, bread, butter, and cake to tide her over until dinner, which was then served fashionably late at eight o’clock. What began as her personal refreshment soon became a cherished social occasion shared with friends, and the timeless tradition continues today at Ventana Grand Café within The Cumberland.

Two Tempting Afternoon Tea Experiences

Whether you prefer something savoury or have a sweet tooth, we’ve created two exquisite Afternoon Tea experiences for you to enjoy by the sea. Each is served daily between 3pm-5pm, accompanied by your choice of Artisan Loose Leaf Tea or freshly brewed Illy Coffee.

Afternoon tea board with scones, finger sandwiches, pastries, Scotch egg, strawberries, jams, teapot and chilled beer.

Introducing Our New Savoury High Tea

Served 15.00 - 17.00 hrs daily

For those who prefer a savoury twist, our Savoury High Tea offers a bold new take on the traditional afternoon tea. Enjoy cheese straws, finger sandwiches, and a savoury cheese scone with jam, alongside hearty bites including a lamb bon bon, sausage roll, and scotch egg. To round it off, there’s even a mini banana loaf for a touch of sweetness.

Perfect Afternoon Tea

I visited the Ventana Grand Cafe for Afternoon Tea (with 6 members of my family) and I would like to thank all the staff for such a delicious tea, beautifully presented, and served by lovely attentive staff. We spent a couple of very relaxing, enjoyable hours in the restaurant and look forward to visiting again.

Afternoon Tea Party

I hosted a baby shower here for a friend. We hired a private room for an afternoon tea party, at a very reasonable price per head, with the mother-to-be going free. The events coordinator, Lisa, was very helpful and accommodating with my specific requests on the lead up to the event. The team on the day in the restaurant were incredibly helpful and friendly. They came in when needed, but also gave us privacy. The food was lovely and the venue was beautiful. I would definitely consider hiring the room again.

I took a party of 36 carers for Afternoon Tea as a treat in Carers Week. The staff were friendly and attentive and gave faultless service. The tea itself was absolutely delicious, right through from the 'amuse bouche' to the cakes and deserts. A big thank you and I thoroughly recommend it.
